This piece was inspired by a photograph in The South in Color, a book capturing life in Mississippi during the 1970s. The figure reminded me of many Black men I’ve known in Chicago — a connection that resonates through the history of the Great Migration, when countless families moved north from Mississippi to build new lives.
I imagine this man riding his little pony out of Mississippi and into Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood — arriving at the corner of 36th and Indiana, a place layered with the stories and legacy of those migrations.
Prints ship rolled in a sturdy tube mailer to ensure safe delivery.
