The title is a triple entendre — referencing the CTA Red Line where the scene unfolds, the discriminatory practice of redlining that has long shaped Chicago, and the fresh lining of a haircut. He Ain’t Heavy nods to the phrase “he ain’t heavy, he’s my brother,” famously spoken by an orphaned boy carrying his polio-stricken sibling.
The painting shows a bald man carefully giving another man a haircut on the train. The man receiving the cut is clearly in need, yet trusts this friend — a man with no hair of his own — to help him feel seen and cared for, even in transit. It’s a quiet celebration of community, support, and love in places many overlook.
Prints ship rolled in a sturdy tube mailer to ensure safe delivery.
